It’s never a bad thing to prepare for the worst when it comes to what could happen during your everyday commute. Here are 6 crucial items you should keep in your vehicle at all times in case you should ever encounter a flat tire, dead battery or an emergency situation that leaves you on the side of the road.

Tire Jack, Spare Tire & Lug Wrench

Unfortunately, flat tires can happen when you least expect them to, especially when you’re driving on Chicagoland roads. (Hello potholes!) Whether you’re in the market for a vehicle or you just purchased one, you will want to make sure that your vehicle has a spare tire. Unfortunately, not all vehicles still come with one (but if you need to buy one, we can help!) If you encounter a flat tire, you can replace it with the spare tire to help you get from point A to point B, or until you can purchase a new tire.

Tire jacks and lug wrenches also go hand-in-hand with a spare tire. You want to make sure that you also have these necessary parts so that you can replace the flat tire yourself if you find yourself on the side of the road. If you don’t have these, you won’t be able to lift your car off the ground enough to remove the tire, nor will you be able to remove the lug nuts that attach your tire to the body of the vehicle.

Jumper Cables

Dead batteries happen. Especially, once the cold weather hits. If you come to find your battery dead, you will want to make sure that you have jumper cables available. (There’s nothing worse than having a dead battery, needing a jump, and not having any jumper cables available; speaking from past experience.) Jumper cables are definitely one of the most important items you should have in your vehicle at all times.

Reflective triangles and/or flares

In case your vehicle is sitting on the side of the road, you will want reflective triangles and/or flares. This helps other drivers see you, especially in the case it’s dark outside, if your vehicle is sitting on the road. You don’t want to be hit when you’re trying to change your tire on the side of the road.

Ice-scraper or snowbrush

It’s always nice to have an ice-scraper or snowbrush in your vehicle at all times, especially within our area. We all know that temperatures can be sunny and 70 degrees one day, then 32 and snowy the next. You don’t want to find yourself in a situation where it randomly snows, and you have no way to wipe off your windshield.

Fire extinguisher

In the event of a real emergency (such as your vehicle overheating or potentially catching fire), you will want a fire extinguisher to help combat any flames while you wait for a fire truck to come and help you.

Whether you think you need the above items in your vehicle or not, you should plan on purchasing them. They’re always nice to have and issues can arise when you least expect them to and it’s fantastic to think ahead and be prepared.
